統計・確率論に関連することば

The Economist 2006年1月7日号　Bayes rules (Psychology)　より　（その3）

統計、確立論などに関連する言葉を見てみましょう。まずは、日常でも使う機会がありそうな（？）言葉から。

☆ inference　推論、推定

推論も、推定も日本語で書くとなんだか似ていますが、英語で説明を見ると違いがはっきりします。出典はHarperCollins PublishersのCollins COBUILDから。

1 An inference is a conclusion that you draw about something by using information that you already have about it.　（=conclusion）

2 Inference is the act of drawing conclusions about something on the basis of information that you already have.

前者は可算名詞、後者は不可算名詞になります。意味からすれば当然ですが。

☆ correlation　相関関係

☆ causation　因果関係

こちらもCOBUILDから。

The causation of something, usually something bad, is the factors that have caused it. (FORMAL)

では、確率分布の種類についてもまとめておきましょう。

★ probability distribution　確率分布

★ normal distribution　正規分布　（Gaussian distribution = ガウス分布、または bell-curve distribution = 釣鐘分布）　記事中では、こんなセンテンスとして出てきます。The best known of these probability distributions is the “normal”, or Gaussian distribution.

★ Poisson distribution　ポアソン分布　Erlang distribution　アーラン分布　power-law distribution　ベキ法則分布　記事中ではこうなています。But there are also the Poisson distribution, the Erlang distribution, the power-law distribution and many even weirder ones that are not the consequence of simple mathematical equations (or, at least, of equations that mathematicians regard as simple).
